Atomic Habits by James Clear
Quote: “Habits matter because they help you become the person you want to be.”
Takeaway: Hands down, this is the best book on building habits. James Clear walks through a very methodical approach to building habits. When we remember that our outcomes in life are the results of our habits – we start paying attention. We must challenge ourselves to improve our habits so we can improve our outcomes.
Wooden by John Wooden
Quote: “Do not become too concerned about what others may think of you. Be very concerned about what you think of yourself.”
Takeaway: This 200 page book doesn’t take long to read, but it is full of powerful quotes and motivational messages. After reading, it becomes extremely obvious how good of a human being John Wooden was. Be a good person and focus on the process – not the outcome.
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen
Quote: “The journey starts with a single step—not with thinking about taking a step”.
Takeaway: There are things that are easy to do and easy not to do. Do them. You will not see a difference in your strength or body after 10 push-ups. You will not see a difference after a week of 70 push-ups. You will see a difference after a year of 3,640 push-ups. The compounding effect is real.
The Martian by Andy Weir
Quote: “I don’t want to come off as arrogant here, but I’m the best botanist on the planet.”
Takeaway: Mark Watney is as sharp as he is sarcastic, which is a perfect combination of characteristics for a main character. He’s stuck on Mars, alone, and he’s got to survive. The Martian is a perfect blend of science, humor and humanity, which makes this one a must read.
The Match by Mark Frost
Quote: “It’s not about who wins or loses, what you score, or how much money you make that matters in the end. It’s not about fame, fortune, or vanity. What matters most are the friendships you forge, how you care for and love those who share the journey with you, and how many others you help along the way. That’s what lasts. That’s how you’ll be remembered. You can bet on it.”
Takeaway: The best golf match you’ve never heard of. 2 of the best golfers ever vs. 2 amateurs. One millionaire has his money on the pros. Another millionaire has his money on the amateurs.
